Single-ply Hinoki 9 mm blade with Chinese penhold grip. Exclusively made in Japan. Any lines on the blade are characteristic of Hinoki wood. They are neither cracks nor signs of glueing/bonding. These are single-ply blades, made of pure HINOKI and each surface is very unique. Darker never glues pieces of Hinoki together but uses glue only to attach the grip pieces to the blade. Hinoki is a very fragile material. Very weak under the strong impact. Even with the rubbers, if you place the blade too roughly on the table it could possibly crack. That is why many Japanese users always carry spare blades, just in case. Handle with care. Resin is one of the characteristics of HINOKI wood. It may come out over time. It does not affect the function of the blade.

31/01/2024 very high quality blade Review by Edmond Yick
Quality
I have purchased 2 Darker J-Speed 90 Hinoka (9mm) Ch.Pen
and use different rubbers; some hard, some soft, some with high spin.
All perform extremely well according to their characteristics.

When I try to purchase the third blade,it is already out of stock. Thanks
to Sergei/Tabletennis11 notice,I have purchased the 2 blades in advance.
The third blade I bought was Darker Speed 90 (ST).

I intend to buy the fourth Darker J-Speed 90 Ch.Pen and pending and restock.

regards!

Honestly I am pretty disappointed about this racket. I can tell that the wood is top-quality and I am sure it can be good for other people, but this racket does not work for me. In particular, it is too small. This racket is significantly smaller than the standard cpen size, and even smaller than DHS cpen blades, which are typically considered to be pretty small. I have large hands and I prefer large rackets. When playing penhold, my fingers take up more than half of the racket on the back, making the RPB very difficult. Furthermore, it is harder to "whip" the racket and use the racket's momentum to create spin (my game is centered around spin rather than speed).

Good parts of this racket are that it has incredible control despite being very fast. Being small makes the control even better (although not worth the loss in spin for me). I think the control+speed is the primary reason to use 1-ply hinoki, and the quality of this wood is the best of the best. I played handshake style a bit with this racket and it felt very nice for handshake style, since the fingers are farther from the contact points. This racket is very good for driving and smashing, and those who play with that style will like this racket.

I have the jpen version of Darker Speed 90, and I like it a lot. The jpen blade is bigger and longer, and would allow a good RPB stroke if you put rubber on the back side. To those looking, especially if you have big hands, I recommend the jpen blade much more highly.

For cpen hinoki blade, I prefer Nittaku Miyabi -- it's a lot bigger than Darker Speed 90 and the quality of wood is not so much worse.

As always, TT11 service was great.

It's the best blade i've played in my life, the feeling/control is very good and the speed that you can generate if you want it's unimaginable.
I use this blade paired with jekyll&hide 47.5 on the both sides and i have a lot of control and a lot of speed when needed.
08/05/2022 Among the best performance/price Review by CSP

I switched from Nittaku Miyabi and found Darker Speed 900 Ch. Pen is far more superior in control and speed: good weight balance, large sweet spot, good feel for the soft game, and yet great spin. It takes time to get used to its power. But one can get easily addicted to its wonderful all-around performance. The thickness of 9mm however means more sanding down required, especially for those with small hands. RPB is also fine if one can create a good grip on the blade. There is no indication that it will break easily.
18/04/2021 Wood is soft light, but it hits the ball with high velocity. Review by Vintage CPEN
Quality
Wood is soft light, but it hits the ball with high velocity. Good for looping and hitting when mated with a soft rubber (like Tenergy FX). Ball feel is not as good as vintage (1970) wood Double Happiness Ch. Pen. Need to sand the handle to form a stable Ch. Pen grip.
05/09/2019 The paddle is too thick Review by JJ
Quality
Maybe I was expecting a lot more from a $200 blade. However, the single ply hinoki wood is not as good as I thought in terms of feel. In addition, 9mm is simply too thick for my penhold grip. It is a good blade with great construction but it is not for me.
